Li Kaifu, vice president of Google global and President of Greater China
On the morning of September 4th, Li Kaifu, vice president of Google global and President of Greater China, will formally resign today and finally choose to leave after the end of the four year term. According to reliable sources, Li Kaifu may start his own business in the future. So far, since the formal entry into China in 2005, the founding team of Google has all left.
It is speculated that Liu Yun, the global vice president of Google, who is currently in charge of Greater China, may succeed Li Kaifu. Liu Yun joined Google in January 08. He previously served as CEO and President of SK Telecom China, the leading mobile operator in Korea.
Sina Technology failed to get timely contact with Google officials in China for comment with Li Kaifu. However, in an exclusive information, Li Kaifu submitted his resignation in August 5th of this year and rejected the invitation from Google to renew his contract.
It is believed that Google China will announce the news officially this morning, and many internal staff have been informed of this matter ahead of schedule. Despite the rumours of Li Kaifu's resignation over the past few years, the real news still shocked many employees. Executives including Google CEO Schmidt visited China to support Li Kaifu.
Li Kaifu is the most controversial player in the war between Google and Microsoft. In July 2005, Li Kaifu, vice president of Microsoft vice president of Google, became the president of Google China. Microsoft then brought Google and Li Kaifu to court in the United States on the grounds of prohibition of business strife, and the two sides secretly reconciled in December of that year.
Li Kaifu, who joined Google for 4 years, has been leading the Chinese team to open up the market. From the earliest recruitment, the formation of the company to the late expansion of partners, and the introduction of localization services, the market share of Google in China has risen from 16.1% in 2006 to 31% at present.
Li Kaifu's abrupt departure may have a strong impact on Google's China business, which was already in a weak position. At present, its main competitor, Baidu, is further strengthening its dominance in the market, and the localization projects that have just begun to improve in Li Kaifu's tenure are likely to be affected, such as the launch of Google's music products.
At present, Aka Naomi designate the successor. In 2005, together with Li Kaifu, two other executives of Google China were formed: Zhou Shaoning, the head of marketing, Wang Huainan, who was in charge of the market, had already left the job.
