Dalian Nationalities University is an ordinary higher education institution directly under the State Ethnic Affairs Commission. It is the only ethnic university in the northeast and coastal open areas. It is also the only ethnic higher learning institution in the country that mainly applies engineering and applied disciplines.

The school was set up in 1984 and formally established in 1997. In April 2006, the three committees of the National People's Congress, the Liaoning provincial government and the Dalian municipal government jointly established the Dalian Nationalities University.

The school covers an area of 720 thousand square meters, with a total construction area of 300 thousand square meters on campus. It consists of 9 two level colleges and 37 undergraduate majors, including the school of economics and management, the school of electrical and information engineering, the school of life science, the school of foreign languages and culture, the school of computer science and engineering, the school of design, the Civil Engineering Institute, the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and the Science Institute.

The school enrolls students from all provinces and autonomous regions, including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. There are 11300 students, 56 ethnic groups and 60% ethnic minority students.

The existing faculty and staff members are over 860, including 1 Chinese Academy of engineering, 3 outstanding national teachers, 3 National Professional Teaching steering committees, 2 experts from the National People's Committee, 2 teaching masters in Liaoning, 50% teachers with advanced professional and technical positions, more than 25% teachers with doctoral degrees, and 84.5% teachers with master's degree or above.

The school aims at building a modern ethnic university with distinctive characteristics and persisting in the tenet of serving the ethnic minority and ethnic areas. It has implemented the three major strategies of "quality education, science and technology, and talents". Especially in the past three years, schools have seized opportunities and scientific development, and have made new leaps in teaching, scientific research, discipline construction, teaching staff and personnel training. By the Ministry of education in 2006, it was rated as one of the 31 universities in China, and became one of the only selected schools in the college.

In 2005, the school won two awards, including 2 national excellent teaching achievements. It is located in the first place in the national universities for nationalities. It ranks second in 75 universities in Liaoning province. In 2006, the school received 1 awards, such as the three award of the national outstanding research achievements in education science, and was identified as the Liaoning biotechnology shortage training and training base.

At present, the National People's Committee and the Ministry of education have built 1 key laboratories, 4 key disciplines at provincial and ministerial levels, two key disciplines in Liaoning, 1 Key National People's Congress laboratories, and 1 key universities in Liaoning.

Since 2004, our school has hosted the 25 National Natural Science Foundation of China, ranking first in the National Institutes of nationalities.

In 2007, our school received 4 projects from the National Social Science Foundation, 4 from the Ministry of education, and 17 from the University's research projects.

1 Dalian humanities and social sciences research bases have been set up, and the food safety assessment and testing center of Dalian Development Zone has also settled in our school.

The school regards improving the quality of the training of students of all nationalities as the fundamental task of running schools. It takes the training of applied and compound talents with innovative spirit, practical ability and open consciousness as the basic orientation of personnel training. In light of the actual situation of all ethnic groups, we should persist in Teaching students in accordance with their aptitude, and carry out the teaching at different levels so as to continuously strengthen the training of practical abilities and applied abilities of all ethnic groups.

Only in 2007, our school students received 1021 awards at the provincial level or above, 425 of them won the discipline competition award at the provincial level or above, and 134 won the national discipline competition award.

Introduction to Design Institute

The school of design has 710 students and 54 faculty members. It has three specialties: Industrial Design (temporary enrollment in 2009), art design and animation.

Since its foundation, the school of design has joined hands with renowned educators and designers at home and abroad to explore a new train of thought suitable for Chinese design education based on Oriental culture.

Through several years of construction and development, a high level teaching team composed of in-service teachers and well-known experts has been formed.

In service teachers are composed of a number of experts and scholars who have strong design ability and can undertake more than ten million yuan project skills. They are interested in design education. Some teachers have undertaken some design works of key projects such as Qingdao Polar Museum and Dalian "Discovery Kingdom" theme park, Tiger Beach Polar Museum, Forest Zoo and other key projects.

The teaching idea of the college is to follow the purpose of humanistic education and to adopt Personality Modeling and professional education in parallel, with professional education as the carrier, and ultimately to achieve the goal of personality shaping.

The Institute carries out the tutorial system training mode, the first stage is the public platform education, and the major students accept the basic knowledge and skill training uniformly.

Starting from the third semester, students majoring in art design have entered the professional studios and studied professionally through two-way selection methods according to their characteristics of learning and quality, character, inclination and hobbies.

The professional set up 12 professional studios, namely, product design, graphic design, landscape design, interior space design, four professional directions, and studio instructors are all full-time and part-time teachers with rich practical experience both at home and abroad.

Animation majors at the senior stage will offer four professional directions: animation, film and television, static frame design and animation products.

The Institute has been committed to cultivating students' ability to learn, adapt to the environment and survive, and cultivate innovative and applied talents.

Students won awards in various design competitions at the international, national, provincial and ministerial levels. In 2009, the design school students won the IF concept design award, one of the oldest design awards in the world. In 2008, the design school students won the gold prize in the world top design competition "the German red dot Design Award" and the "Dongguan Cup" international industrial design competition and the "Zhenhai Cup" international industrial design competition.

The employment rate of graduates has remained above 90%. Among the graduates, there are some influential media companies such as Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen.

The school of design now has 3 undergraduate majors in art design, animation and industrial design, and industrial design majors will not recruit students in 2009.

Art Design Major

We should cultivate basic expression skills, basic theories and application abilities with artistic design, and be able to engage in applied and creative talents in art design, visual communication design, environmental design, teaching and scientific research in enterprises, institutions, professional design departments and scientific research units.

The art design profession has four professional directions, namely, product design, graphic design, landscape design and interior space design, with 12 professional studios.

Main courses: graphic design, color science, ergonomics, creativity, plane three-dimensional performance and techniques, modeling foundation, marketing, psychology, Design Conspectus, computer aided design, advertising design, interior design, landscape design, product design, system design, etc.
