The Number Of Textile And Garment Factories Closes This Year In Kampuchea
The rise in the number of closed garment factories threatens the economic viability of Kingdom of Cambodia, which is the main economic sector in Kampuchea, a labor official said.
Cheat Khemara, President of the Kampuchea Garment Manufacturers Association (GMAC), said that the number of garment factories closed so far this year is close to that of 2007.
Kaing Monika, external affairs manager of Kampuchea Garment Manufacturers Association, said that a total of 25 factories were closed, 16 new factories were put into operation, and the number of closed factories reached 9. In 2007, the number of factories closed was 10.
About 2000 workers are out of work because of factory closures, said Chea Mony, President of the Kampuchea resources and trade union, Kampuchea's largest labor organization.
Too many trade unions
Kaing Monika said that because of the potential new investors' confusion, the influence of the trade union was hurting the industrial sector. The state gives too much freedom to the trade union. There are about 1000 different alliances in the 33 factories.
Cheat Khemara said that the government's policy of not building factories in big cities also brought problems to some workers.
Chea Mony estimates that in addition to workers affected by factory closures, 27000 other workers are unemployed. Kampuchea has 350 thousand garment workers nationwide.
