The school of art and design is one of the four universities in the country with the doctorate of design arts. It is also the first place in the six provinces of central and southern China to have the doctorate of design arts, post doctoral mobile post of art and master of industrial design engineering. Its design discipline is the key subject of Hubei province.

The college has nearly 1300 undergraduates, more than 400 graduate students, nearly 30 PhD candidates, and nearly 120 faculty members.
There are 15 directors and 37 professors in the center for the design arts of the college and the school. A team of highly qualified teachers with reasonable structure has formed a large number of excellent talents for the country, and many students have won important awards at home and abroad or provincial or ministerial level.
While completing the teaching and educating work, the school has also established a school design art research center, serving the society in an all-round way. It has carried out environmental design, product design, corporate image design, system design, graphic design, digital media design, animation, exhibition design and construction for the government, large and medium-sized enterprises in Beijing, Anhui, Henan, Hubei, Guangdong, Fujian, Zhejiang and Gansu provinces, and has completed the new products and new designs that the market needs. Historical evolution
The predecessor of the school of art and design of Wuhan University of Technology is the former Wuhan Institute of Technology Design Institute, the art and Design Department of Wuhan traffic science and Technology University, and the Department of art and design, Wuhan Institute of automotive technology.
On the basis of the art education tradition formed by the original three principals, the Academy was approved by the Ministry of education in 1987 to open the industrial modeling design (later renamed industrial design), and became the first executive director of the China Industrial Design Association and the vice chairman of the national building materials industry design society.
In 1988, the first undergraduate of industrial design was enrolled.
In 1991, the first International Conference on industrial design was held in China.
In 1994, with the approval of the academic degree Office of the State Council, the college set up the master's degree of industrial plastic arts (after unified adjustment to design art), and in 1999, the first master of Engineering in industrial design in China was established.
In the meantime, art design began to recruit undergraduates in 1995, and animation majors began to recruit undergraduates in 1998 on the basis of recruiting junior college students.
In 2000, the former Wuhan Polytechnic University, Wuhan Jiaotong University and Wuhan Automotive Industry University merged to form Wuhan University of Technology. In May of next year, the former three departments merged to form Wuhan University of Technology College of art and design.
Since then, Professor Chen Hanqing and academia team successfully obtained the first doctoral program of art and design in central and southern China in September 8, 2003, and also added a master's degree in fine arts and communication studies.
In 2004, the design art discipline of all the undergraduate majors in the college was awarded the provincial key subject. The college also obtained the first batch of University Master's right to grant master of Arts in design and master of Arts (MFA).
In 2005, master of Arts was also awarded.
Since then, the Institute has completed 1 national quality courses and approved 1 National Humanities and social sciences fund projects. It has successfully declared 12 state-level "11th Five-Year" planning teaching materials, and the industrial design profession has been rated as a provincial brand major, and has achieved a large number of teaching and scientific research achievements.
In 2007, design art was approved to be a special professor of Chutian scholar program.
In August 14, 2007, the Academy approved the post doctoral mobile station of Arts by the Ministry of personnel, and achieved a "zero" breakthrough in the post doctoral mobile station of Arts in central and southern China.
This is not only the embodiment of the comprehensive strength of disciplines, but also marks the entry of a higher level development platform for art and design institutes, and ushering in new opportunities for development.

Discipline construction
Art is a key discipline in the construction and development of Wuhan University of Technology's "211" project, with postdoctoral mobile stations.

In September 2003, it became one of the four academies authorized by the doctor of Design Arts in China. The profession is the executive director of the China Industrial Design Association and the member of the industrial design and Art Committee of the Chinese Artists Association.
